Interlacing

Once you surface

in cities
above ground,
even in cities,
it is all

airy.

Our co-mingled breaths
whistle through
wrought-iron gates
of big buildings,
interlacing.

We inhale
the wandering
breaths
of thousands,

our lungs swimming
in the sea of us.

  1. We inhale

    of thousands,

    our lungs swimming

that is the perfect description of being ina city…love this…having come from NYC not too long back….

  2. I read somewhere that with every breath, we inhale an atom exhaled by Julius Ceaser….I think that’s amazing and makes ~ “We inhale the wandering breaths of thousands” ~ so true…awesome write, Brian… 🙂

  3. O, yes…I like the notion of sharing the breath of thousands…makes the city and its inhabitants more connected …original, fine write, Brian!

  4. Swimming in the sea of us….fantastic way to describe our cities. This was a really well written observational piece- well placed words – ‘airy’ all out on its own in the air so to speak- very nice
