hometownboy

Although we know this city
(and it is our own),

its hidden streets
unwalked, unmapped

give shape

and maybe,
these invisible alleyways,

empty of everything
except night,

are required
for us foraging citizens

to understand
what can’t be met in the full light of day
can be sensed only in the half-awareness of existence.

  1. what can’t be met in the full light of day
can be sensed only in the half-awareness of existence…. i like that much…in every city there are these secret corners that only can be understood under a certain light..

  2. invisible alleyways,

    empty of everything
    except night

There’s plenty of those in your hometown – mine too. Nice piece of writing Brian – it captures something of the more sinister side of our urban environments.

  3. “Empty of everything except night” ?!?! YES !! Love that line Brian and the “half-awareness of existence” – love how your mind works Brian !!

  4. I consider myself pretty much empty of everything but the night…much like your city…a wonderful weave…puts me in mind of some more “newer” alleyways 😉

  5. we all need invisible alleyways were light is unable to reveal all. too much exposure—too much ‘real’—can be as painful as a searing burn.

    really lovely verse.
