when we were modern

when tenements went

and got bulldozed down

we zipped ourselves up
in lifts skywards,
rocketing into new futures

centrally heated
neighbour strangers
gave distant nods

whilst we
in our modernity
clung in webs of stares

palms to the glass
misting the view
of our old playgrounds below
