Everyday Heart and Soul

Our throats
gurgling,
the meat of us.
Head back, exposing
the offal of our vulnerability.
but when devoured,
prove
peculiarly devoid of heart.

You dive in there,
snuffling your snout,
rabid for the truffles of our souls
only to come up
crimson-nosed and empty.

The jewels
are in the heart in the head.

We get fed.

We store
the precious stones of bliss,
the quivering nerve ends of joy
in our layered consciousnesses
where we alchemise the lead of life
into the gold of understanding.
